I have just stated to use greenalp and find it very good.
Even in tree cover it tracks accurately.
This is useful because I work alone in the woods
and my wife can see where I am in real time
I am not sure how much it costs in phone charges
if you have it on for hours on end

This depends on your mobile provider contract. As long as your internet is free (flat rate) there should not be any charges from your provider.

Indeed, it depends on the network you use.
The rates are different with different network provider.
